IRS Requirements For Tax Pros

The Internal Revenue Service requires all tax professionals who want to electronically file tax returns to register as an Electronic Return Originator (ERO). Upon acceptance as an ERO, the IRS assigns the practitioner an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN). To register as an ERO a tax professional must obtain, complete, and submit Form 8633, “Application to Participate in the IRS e-file Program.” An official IRS fingerprint card must be submitted with Form 8633. Please be aware that the IRS will not accept fingerprint cards in any other format, so it’s important that you use the IRS’s official fingerprint card to ensure that your application goes through smoothly.

IRS Revenue Procedures and Rules for participating in the IRS e-file program can be found on the IRS’s website at www.irs.gov. If you have any questions about the ERO process or paperwork, or if your confused about where to begin, just call us and we will walk you through completing the form and submitting it to the IRS. In fact, you may want to call us first because there are many IRS technicalities involved that could cause confusion.
